i have what i think is a wooden thread holder. it has a encased cross stich on the lid. can you let me know how to date something like this,and if there are any good web sites that i can look at to gain more information on it.

Hello Siobhan.  Without a picture, I am at a loss on your item.  There are many books out on sewing accessories, so you might try your local library.  There are also a number of sites on the internet established by collectors to share their collections.  Try the various search engines and you may get lucky.  The other suggestion I have is to sewing eBay on sewing collectibles or wooden thread holders and see if you can find something close to what you have.  Good luck with your "hunt."  Barbara
