Collectibles--General (Modern)/Porcelain Insulator

Question
Insulator
Insulator
Hi Bob,

I found a couple of these insulators near an abandoned hydro electric power station that was shut down at least 40 years ago.  Normally I only go after glass insulators but these were all I came across that day.  The insulator measures about 6" high and 3.5" across.  It very heavy for it's size and has a steel base and top.  I gave it a soak to clean the bottom off and can't find any markings on it anywhere.  Do you happen to know what this is and if it has any value, or did I find just unique boat anchors?

Regards
Ken

Answer
Hi Ken --

What you found is a station post insulator.  These are typically used in sub-stations to hold bus bars and switching equipment running at high voltage.  A number of companies made these styles so I can't be sure of the maker without any markings.  These are collectible, but only a small subset of collectors go after switching or substation equipment.  I'd put a $3-$5 value on these.  These probably date from the 1930's.

         Thanks, --Bob
