Collectibles--General (Modern)/Baby blue insulator

I found a baby blue barbell shaped insulator. It weighs a couple pounds, has a wide groove in the middle with two additional grooves on each side. No markings on it but is quite large and I cant seem to find any info on it. Additionally, it was found during a survey I was doing at a company that had been around since 1920. Any info would be great!

Hi Mellissa,

What you have is a large "spool" insulator with a very nice light blue glaze.  These were mounted on a metal bracket with a pin through the middle to either terminate a power line or provide a strong mount where a line turns a corner, etc.  The wire would tie to the center of the spool.  I'd date this from the 1940's most likely -- are there any markings on it?  These are very collectable, especially in that nice glaze color.  I'd put the value around $15-$18 for collectors.  Here is a link with more information on spool insulators:

Note the third picture which has a number of unmarked spools similar to yours.

         Hope this helps!  Thanks, --Bob

Questions related to collecting Glass Insulators and porcelain insulators - I can provide historical information as well as current collector values. I am also interested in purchasing insulators I need for my collection.

I have collected since the early 1970's and have much historical information, as well as knowledge of current insulator values.
