Your gun was manufactured during the WW II era when Daisy was not allowed to make air rifles and toys from metal.
Yours is known as the No. 85 Daisy Commando and was made from 1943 to 1946. It was designed to be a "play rifle" rather than an air rifle. Air rifles shoot metal projectiles such as BBs.
