About DaisyBBGunner
Expertise
Please read my entire profile. First, a BB gun or a pellet gun IS NOT A TOY. These must be treated like any loaded gun. Always assume one is loaded and never point it at anything you do not intend to shoot. Especially, never point it at a person. I can answer questions about Daisy products, including age and history. I can give production dates of most Daisy air rifles/BB guns and toys with a degree of accuracy within a year.

Experience
I am an avid collector of products made by the Daisy Manufacturing Company. These include Daisy BB guns, toys, accessories, catalogs, and advertisements of all kinds dating back to 1890. I have recently published the book An Encyclopedia of Daisy Plymouth Guns, which can be seen at www.daisyencyclopedia.com.

Subject: Dating of Daisy Model 25 Air Rifle

Question
Hello:

I would like some help identifying an antique Daisy Air Rifle that belonged to my grandfather.  It has an unusual pump-action and is engraved with the following behind the sight:

DAISY No 25
DAISY MFG. CO.
PLYMOUTH MICHIGAN

There are several patent numbers also: 1.097244 / 1.114.49 / 1.136470 / 1.2310649 / 1.573.383 (The last being somewhat illegible.)

I am not sure where to look for a Register Number or Lot Number on the gun--the only numbers I can see engraved are those (Patent Numbers) listed above.

Could you tell me the year that this gun was manufactured?  I am considering selling it but may keep it.  Either way I would appreciate the information if you can help me.

THANKS for your time!

Sincerely, Wendy Scuccimarra

Answer
Wendy,

Without seeing the gun, your question is hard for me to answer.  These patent numbers first went on a Daisy No. 25 pump gun in 1930.
In 1936, a very intricate engraving was stamped in the frame on either side, which had a hunter and birds and many floral swirls.  The gun did not change at all from 1936 until late 1952.  It could have been made anytime in that range except for the WW II years when Daisy was not able to produce anything made of metal.

While one of the most eye-pleasing designs ever made, the variation of the No. 25 with the engraving and wood stock was also the most common variation.

I would hope that you decide to keep this gun in your family.  As an item it is not worth all that much, but as an heirloom, it is priceless.
