Question
QUESTION: I have just begun collecting and I have about 600 cars my only trouble so far is determining what year they are. I have some that have the date 2006 on the back and they say 2006 new models and some say 2007 new models. Is there a easy way to determine what cars are what year I have cars from 1991 to present. Thanks
ANSWER: Hi and thanx for writing!
Telling what year a car is from is hard when you don't have the package. The date on the bottom of the cars is not it's production date, it is actually the date that particular casting (design) was patented or copyrighted. The only way to really tell what year it was produced is to buy a Hot Wheels guide and look through all of the pictures and see if you can find the car in question.
That's the only way....

Well.... there are copyright dates on the backs of the packages and those are usually a year behind. Copyright 2004 usually means a production year of 2005. Any mainline car produced 2000 and newer, will have the date on the front of the package. For instance, the 2007 cards have in the lower right hand corner an 07 and 110/180 below it. That means that it is a 2007 series, card 110 of 180 cars in the series.
