I had a lease with an apartment complex from Aug 2006 for 12 months. When Aug 2007 came around I extended the lease for a few more days and I also gave them ny 30 day notice the same day. The lease was up Sept 14 which was when I deployed to Iraq. Couple of days ago I was checking my credit report just to find out the apartments I used to live in had turn a "debt" to a collection agency. They are claiming $961.00 supposedly the rent for the month of Oct and the rest for the month of Sep 2006. I have never received a letter from the apartment complex or the collection agency saying that I owe them money but it is already reported to the Credit Bureau. What can I do? Since I never receive a notice saying that I owe money, can they take it off my credit report and we deal with it?
Thanks!
Answer Katherine:
You need to dispute the tradeline through the collection agencies. In addition, you need to request validation from the debt collector and verification from the apartment complex.
