Collections Law/Summons on credit given to a 17 yr old

Question
I opened a checking account when I was 17 yrs. old, in high school and no job.  The man that opened the account asked me if I wanted an overdraft protection, I said yes.  Well, it turns out that gave me a $1,000 credit limit on a credit card.  I was 17 yrs. old, no clue I would get in trouble.  Now, I just got served yesterday morning on 10/2/08, my court date is 10/20/08.  First how did I even get credit in my name at the age of 17?  How can they expect me to appear in court just 18 days after being served.  The debit started out at about $1,200., and now they want me to pay $3,600.  How is this possible?  I live in Illinois, the credit is in Illinois, I don't have the exact date the account was open, but I was 17 yrs. old when I signed it.  Further, I live in Cook County, IL. and that is the same place the account was opened.  WHAT CAN I DO NEXT.  I don't think I was a responsible adult when I was given this, and I still don't have a well paying job.  Please respond to the above e-mail choscheit@gmail.com , a.s.a.p.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Ryan:

Even if you did open the account when you were 17, if you kept it open after reaching the age of majority then you ratified the contract.  You need to consult with an attorney in IL and file an answer.
