Question
QUESTION: 1.  Is it true that bill collectors cannot call you after 7 years is up for a bill collection?

2.  Am I responsible for an old cell phone bill that my husband did not pay (due to being overcharged) before we got married?

Thanks.

ANSWER: Rachel:

No, that is untrue.  Seven years is the reporting limit prescribed by the FCRA.  A debt collector can call you about a debt much older unless you notify them in writing not to do so inasmuch as it is inconvienent.

No, you are not responsible for a debt incurred by your husband before you married him (some community property states may vary but, this is the general rule of applicability).
