Collections Law/Can Debt collectors get at my Social Security Disability by going after my bank account?

Question
I was born with a serious heart defect and been in & out of hospitals most of my life, but I still managed to work when I could. In 2002 I became disable to work any more. I was approved for Social Security Disability, and I'm on Medicare. My wife works two jobs. Our concern is that I owe a lot of money from old credit cards that we had before I became disable. I get collection letters and phone calls almost every day from collectors. My wife has her own checking & savings account with no more then $75.00 combine. We have a joint checking & saving with about $200.00 combine. My SS check is direct deposited into my checking acct. My wife's 2 paychecks are direct deposited into her checking acct, and I transfer the money from hers to our joint acct., so I can pay our montly bills.
We rent and don't own any realestate or land. We have a 2002 Chevy that's been paid off. All the outstanding credit cards are in my name only.
I have been told that "collectors" can't garnish my SSD checks, but are our bank accounts safe from them? If not, is there anything we can do to keep what little we have? And how can I stop Midland Credit Manager from calling? Their number won't show up on our called ID, it just comes in as "incoming call" and doesn't even register's as a phone call.

I'd keep all of my money totally separate from hers and don't put any money in the account that isn't SS money.

As far as the phone calls go you should visit http://www.creditwrench.com/18questions.html and use the phone script there. They will stop calling very soon.

Experience

I've been an active consumer advocate for more than 40 years and have helped hundreds of people win cases against debt collectors as well as helping them defeat demands for summary judgment lodged against them by banks, debt collectors and defeat mortgage foreclosures and keep their homes.

Education/Credentials
Paralegal courses for the most part.
I have been teaching people how to deal with judgments, mortgage foreclosures and other such problems both on and off the internet for many, many years. I am a Richard Cornforth information provider ever since 2000 and worked with many other organizations and causes since 1980. I was Oklahoma State Chairman for the nationwide drive to defeat the Constitutional Convention which was proposed by various factions within our federal government such as the Council of State Governments and the National Organization of State Governors who were working hard to organize a Constitutional Convention to be held in 1995 for the purpose of rewriting our American Constitution to be more acceptable to the United Nations. I worked with Senator Charles Duke of Colorado and Senator Don Rogers of California and many others across the nation to keep them from getting the number of delegate states required to lawfully hold a Con-Con and we were successful. I have worked with many other legislative issues in Oklahoma and have always been very successful.
