Question
Hi,
I was in the US for a few years and had credit cards. I left US back in 2005 as my work visa expired. Since then I have been paying the minimum every month with all my savings and earnings. I am in Canada now and all my savings are exhausted. Now it is extremely difficult for me to pay even the minimum with my earnings which has gone down recently. What are my legal options?

Answer
Chowdhury:

Your first option is to walk away from the debt.  You're in Canada, the companies are in the U.S., they are not going to be able to serve you and jurisdiction and conflicts of laws would be a very difficult obstacle for them.

Secondly, if Canada has bankruptcy protection chapters and you qualify you may consider that.
