Question Hello,
I was wondering if you would help inform me in regards to this situation. I am a victim where my parents used my personal information when i turned 18 without my knowledge, while attending college i believed i had 1 credit card and found out they have opened 3 in my name, i called each credit card company before they be late payments and closed them and have for the course of 3 years paid them all off.
In my junior year they had made me sign for 2 homes, for if i had not i would not have a place to live. They were paying the bills on time and then stopped to where it shows 120+ days pass due then sold, and 1 home foreclosed. It has since ruined my credit and know it will take 7 years before it falls off my history.
At the age of 21, they gave me a BMW due to my old car having problems and said i would be making payments of only 300 which was fine by me until i saw i really had to pay over 500 dollars, i kept up with the payments as long as i could, I informed my parents i could no longer make the payments they took the car and said ok. i later found out through my equifax that the car was given back and define as Charged Off.
I have gotten my social now secure so this can no longer happen and my credit can't be run without my approval. now at the age of 23 i am paying my 2 credit cards on time and my school loans trying to improve credit, yet a collection company recently call me stating i need to pay the Car Loan Bill of 15,000 when it has already tarnished my credit and define as Charged Off. What should i do? I am struggling as is just graduating from college.

You, My Friend, are a VICTIM of Identity Theft. After reading your letter it makes me sick to think that parents would use their kids data to benefit themselves.
Here is the deal. The legal issues surrounding this topic are as follows:
Definition:
The theft of a child's identity by his or her parents. Parents will sometimes steal their children's identity to open credit card accounts, utility accounts, bank accounts, and even to take out loans or secure leases because their own credit history is insufficient or too damaged to open such accounts.
Parent/Child identity theft may occur more often than many people realize, especially in economically depressed areas. It can sometimes take 10-15 years for the crime to be discovered, and even when it is, it's not often reported because it is a familial crime.
Also Known As: Child Identity Theft
Examples: When she tried to apply for financial aid for college, Sheila discovered she was the victim of parent/child identity theft.
The parent has destroyed his/her own credit or driving record. Instead of repairing the damage done to his or her own records, this parent begins to use the information of the child he or she should be protecting. This person may even convince himself/herself that the all the bills will be paid on time and that this action will not impact the child. Rarely does this happen. Not only do these imposters not clean up their own records, but they usually fall behind on the bills under the “new” information.
Both the eventual financial burden and the emotional impact on this child are great. Unfortunately, most law enforcement agencies hesitate to get involved, believing that this type of case falls into the jurisdiction of “family law.” It does not.
The Bottom Line is that you are just started out in life. You will greatly benefit from a Social Security Number change, if approved by SSA, because you are still in the process of getting college credits and starting a credit history.
It is when you have a lengthy credit or work history that things become complicated. If you follow all the repair procedures and the problem continues, this may be the only answer, especially if criminal identity theft is also involved.
The real issue is that you ARE THE VICTIM! So, be methodical about how you deal with this. You may have to even file a police report.
