Question

I have a Collector calling me on behalf of an apartment complex I left just under 7 years ago.  They state, and I do not know if it is accurate or not, that I owe $3000 in unpaid rent and early termination fees.  My roommate at the time handled the entire affair and I'd been led to beleive we left the complex on good terms.  I have never seen this show on my credit report, but the agency insists they have reported it.  When I asked for verification, they laughed and told me it had been 7 years and they were no longer required to furnish proof.  They insist this will be sent to court within days if I don't make arrangements to pay.  They also reference a call to me several months ago in which I promised to talk to my former roommate, though I do not recall speaking with them before.  What should I do here?

   The account is likely time barred should they decide to sue.  Moreover, it isn't on your reports thus, there is really nothing they can do to you.  If they do sue, assert the statute of limitations as an affirmative defense.
