Question
I owe over 40K to AMEX that has been turned over to Nationwide Credit. I am still being charged interest, and when I called AMEX they said they had nothing to do with that decision, and when I called Nationwide Credit to see if they would lower or stop interest payments they said that they would not be able to do so unless I agreed to pay off the total in three months and that AMEX would then issue me a 1099 for the amount of interest that I did not end up paying, that this was the only plan that AMEX offered and that they had no say in the matter. Who has the power to make that decision or to help me vis a vis the interest situation...another collection agency has stopped adding interest to another AMEX account that I had that has also been placed in collections for approx. $28K
after I made payments in good faith for three months.

Answer
Nina,

Nationwide Credit in Phoenix is calling you about this right?

It sounds like they are giving you a 3 month payoff.  Meaning they will not stop the late fees but are willing to settle the account.

If they settle and save you more than 599.00 you will be dinged with a 1099.

They can do far better!  The more you pay, the larger the commission check.  Be firm get everything in writing!
