Collections Law/Garnisment

Question
I live in Washington state and have been getting garnished for old medical bills due to my jobs poor medical coverage for couple years now and have never been able to save enough to file for bankruptcy.

I work a retail job and am trying to support myself and my disabled wife and our 3 year old little girl.

But I am unable to provide for them due to the garnishments.
Right now we are late on rent and have a 3 day pay or vacate notice.

I have heard you can talk to the court about it,and maybe get them stopped for awhile. But who exactly would I talk to?

Thank you so much.

Answer
You may appeal to the judge and ask that they suspend the garnishment for a period of time or release it altogether. You will need to write a letter to the judge and ask for a hearing, then present your case as you did here.

You may also file bankruptcy to stop the garnishment. Depending on your state you may also enter into a trusteeship through the courts but this will only allow you to spread the garnishment money among several creditors instead of just the one.

Or you could contact the creditor or their attorney and ask them to accept a payment plan with reduced payments if they stop the garnishment.

Try writing the courts first.

Keep me posted.
