Collections Law/Will Credit Card Settlement affect my credit as if I claimed bankruptcy?

Question
I was a cosigner for my ex fiancé’s lease vehicle because he had bad credit. He stopped making payments then it was reposed and he claims he will not pay what is owed. The difference the collection agency (Bank) wants is $16K, but willing to make a settlement for $8K. There is no way I can afford to pay this off because I have my own debt and mortgage. I am 17K in debt total with the one credit card I have. I used to have a credit score of 750, but as of current it is 600. I want to know if I should make a settlement with my Bank of America credit card and how it will affect my credit. Is it just as worse as claiming bankruptcy with the credit bureaus? (I do not want to claim bankruptcy) I am not sure what to do. My credit means a lot to me. Any help is greatly appreciated!
