Collections Law/Dentist bill sent to creditors

Question
November 2008, I had work done on my son's tooth, with insurance. Early May 09 I received a notice that payment had not been received and would be turned over to collection agency.  I immediately contacted their billing dept. and gave more insurance info and she said that she would not send to coll. agency and would file insurance. No further communications from them.  June 3, 09 I received a letter from collection agency with an additional $400 charge.  The contact at dentist won't talk to me and apparently never filed on insurance.  I am in Florida and will be writing Coll. Agency to dispute charge. I have excellent credit now and want to keep it that way but I don't want to be wrongfully charged.  I never received any notification of problems prior to this action.  What should I do next? Thanks.

Answer
Dear Jerry,

Thank you for your question.

You can dispute this debt to the collection agency.  In return they must supply proof this debt is valid while holding off from reporting to the credit bureaus.  If the agency returns documentation the debt is valid, it must be paid.

When sending the dispute letter remember to send it certified mail.
