Question
I just got a letter today from a collection agency for a phone bill from 2002 while I lived in the state of Kansas. The original amount was only $85. They are saying that I have to pay them over $215 to settle the debt. I know that they can charge interest, but I don't get where they are coming up with the end amount. I live in Missouri now and the letter says that unless I contact them or make a full payment, I will be "subject to any and all interest and or penalties allowable under the terms of the original contract and in accordance with the laws in the state of Missouri." So, my question is this: How much interest can they actually charge, and what fees can they also legally charge?
Thanks for your time!

Answer
Dear Tracey,

Thank you for your question.   The debt collection agency can charge interest and fees on the account.  Check with Missouri's collection laws, they may transparent about percentage debt collectors can charge.

Good Luck
