Question
Someone used my social security number to turn on gas in their name about 10 years ago. What are the statue of limitations on that and if filing for identity theft or filing a generic report, even if I knew who did it, will do any good at this point since its an old bill. I'm in the state of Texas and don't know too much about the law here.

Answer
Even if it was over ten years ago, you can make the claim that you just found out about it. You can call the electric company and ask them what form of an identity theft affidavit will they accept. Many companies want you to use their form rather than use the FTC Identity Theft affidavit.

After that submit the affidavit to them. From my experience it can take 60 days to for them to respond.

After that you should be OK.
