Question
If a patient tells me she is in the process of filing bankruptcy when I call to request a payment, may I send her a final notice and/or send her to collections if I have not received an official bankruptcy notice yet?

Answer
Laurie,

If someone says they are in the process, then you can ask for the bankruptcy attorney name to verify there claims. You could also ask for the case number and get on www.pacer.com to verify. But you do not have to stop collections until you receive the official notice of bankruptcy.
