Collections Law/validation

Question
Asked HSBC to verify an old account and all they told me that they had was a payment that was made using a phone service. They stated that the account was open in 2003 and last payment was in 2004. The debt was sold, is this really a good validation?

Answer
Ken:

Originally creditors are not bound by the FDCPA and accordingly, they don't have to "validate" old debts.  Ask them to verify the debt under the FACTA amendments to the FCRA.
