Collections Law/Never received a medical bill now sent to collections

Question
Late June threw early July my husband was in the hospital off in on. I have received 10 different medical bills in the mail and have been paying on each one for the last two months now. My husband just received a phone call today from a collection agency telling us they are attempting to collect a debt from a medical bill that we haven't heard of or received a bill from. We have worked very hard for the last two years now to clean up our credit. Is there anything that we can do?
Call the original creditor and explain what happened. Ask if they can retract the account and let you make payments. Other than that I don't know what you can do. The collection agency MAY let you make payments with out reporting you to the credit bureaus but I doubt it. I hate I do not have better news.
