Question
have been divorced for 11 years. I just had debt collectors come after me for debts from my ex that happed years (6-9) after we have been divorced.  I have taken my divorce decee to the agency and they don't seem to care that we havent even been remotly together for the 11 years.  The kicker is if they continue to come after me I could lose my job at a military base for being a finacial risk. what should I do?

Answer
The debt is well outside statute of limitations so you could beat any lawsuit they might file against you and it is highly doubtful that they would file a lawsuit. You can easily fight it off your credit reports as well so there really isn't much to worry about in terms of it getting back to your superiors and even so a simple explanation of how old the debt is and that it isn't even your debt but a debt that belongs to your ex should take care of any problems. If they try to get it on your credit reports or sue you there would be no problem winning against them in federal court and your damages would be tremendous if you lost your job because of it.

If you did lose your job the damage award might easily be figured at whatever your potential earnings and retirement might be worth. That would be huge indeed. You might not have to work for the rest of your life. This could turn into a really serious situation and they are probably well aware of that.

Experience

I've been an active consumer advocate for more than 40 years and have helped hundreds of people win cases against debt collectors as well as helping them defeat demands for summary judgment lodged against them by banks, debt collectors and defeat mortgage foreclosures and keep their homes.

Education/Credentials
Paralegal courses for the most part.
I have been teaching people how to deal with judgments, mortgage foreclosures and other such problems both on and off the internet for many, many years. I am a Richard Cornforth information provider ever since 2000 and worked with many other organizations and causes since 1980. I was Oklahoma State Chairman for the nationwide drive to defeat the Constitutional Convention which was proposed by various factions within our federal government such as the Council of State Governments and the National Organization of State Governors who were working hard to organize a Constitutional Convention to be held in 1995 for the purpose of rewriting our American Constitution to be more acceptable to the United Nations. I worked with Senator Charles Duke of Colorado and Senator Don Rogers of California and many others across the nation to keep them from getting the number of delegate states required to lawfully hold a Con-Con and we were successful. I have worked with many other legislative issues in Oklahoma and have always been very successful.
