Collections Law/Age of original debt

Question
I live in New Jersey and I have just been contacted by a court officer who is telling me that I owe a company called Century Financial over $5000.00.  He claims that on 5/22/10 a judgement was entered against me in my local court. ( now this was a Saturday, which the letter indicates, and I know the court is not opened on Saturdays) I had some credit cards approx. 8-10 years ago and I thought that there may be a limit on the amount of time you can sue for the amount owed. And if a second company did that and sold this debt to a "court officer" ...is this legal?   How do I find out the original creditor and the age of this debt?  He is threatening me to seize all assets unless I set up a payment plan???  I have not worked in 8 years and have no assets!

Answer
Go to the county clerk's office and ask to see your public record. Look for any judgments and get the paperwork in the file and let's see what is in there before we go any further with this.
Once you have the paperwork in the case from the court clerk's office get back with me and let's see what needs to be done.

Experience

I've been an active consumer advocate for more than 40 years and have helped hundreds of people win cases against debt collectors as well as helping them defeat demands for summary judgment lodged against them by banks, debt collectors and defeat mortgage foreclosures and keep their homes.

Education/Credentials
Paralegal courses for the most part.
I have been teaching people how to deal with judgments, mortgage foreclosures and other such problems both on and off the internet for many, many years. I am a Richard Cornforth information provider ever since 2000 and worked with many other organizations and causes since 1980. I was Oklahoma State Chairman for the nationwide drive to defeat the Constitutional Convention which was proposed by various factions within our federal government such as the Council of State Governments and the National Organization of State Governors who were working hard to organize a Constitutional Convention to be held in 1995 for the purpose of rewriting our American Constitution to be more acceptable to the United Nations. I worked with Senator Charles Duke of Colorado and Senator Don Rogers of California and many others across the nation to keep them from getting the number of delegate states required to lawfully hold a Con-Con and we were successful. I have worked with many other legislative issues in Oklahoma and have always been very successful.
