Collections Law/hospital bill

Question
I had surgery done at the hospital where I was employed. The hospital offers a discount to their employees (they wave the copayment and the deductible). I received a bill for 105.20. I didn't pay it within 90 days so I received a letter stating that I was being sent to collections if I didn't pay the $105.20. I put a check in the mail that very day for the amount. 30 days later I received a bill from the collections agency stating that I owed $744.98. I called the hospital and inquired since I thought that I had paid the bill off when I received the warning letter. They stated that since I didn't pay within 30 days they put the amount that they had discounted my bill back on and sent that to collections. I never received a bill for that amount even after they put it back on. I paid the amount that I received the bill for. Am I still responsible for the remainder of the bill? It doesn't sound legit to me. Also when I checked with the insurance company my patient responsibility was less than the bill I got from collections.

Answer
Dear Anne,

The first thing you need to verify is the content of the Employee Discount Program.  If the document states "failure of payment within the 30 days constitutes an adjustment from the prorated amount" you may be held liable for the payback of the entire bill.

However, this also raises questions regarding payment from your insurance company.  What did your insurance pay towards the procedure?
