Question
I moved out of a duplex about 8 years ago and got my own place. Little did I know that whoever was living in that duplex after me either turned the electricity on illegally or turned it on in my named without authorization. What can I do now that TXU has this item on my credit report and it is crippling. I don't think it fair they can just turn electricity on or charge electricity in my name. Should I sue TXU for the years of credit crippling and letting my identity be stolen or is there a statue that says after so many years they have to drop this. I just need to get this corrected.

Answer
Mkat,

TXU can only leave the negative item on your credit report for 7 years from the date of last delinquency. After that it has to be removed. You may want to try to dispute this debt at the three credit bureaus as being out of statute since it has been 8 years. I hope this helps.
