Collections Law/Old Medical Bill

Question
Hello,
I am trying to find out if I am liable for a medical bill that has a date of service of 2/2006 and 4/2006 and I was just notified today 12/2011 for this bill?  This is the first time I am receiving any notice of this and yet they have on the bill >120 days past due and a statement threatening to send this bill to collections if not paid in 30 days.  I looked up the SOL for GA and it says for written contracts 6 years but I am unclear of what that means.  Is there something I can do to fight this?

Answer
The first thing I would do is call the doctor's office and see what took so long for you to be notified. As far as fighting it, there is not much you can do since the SOL has not ran out yet.  The best thing to do is offer them a settlement and pay the account so it will not affect your credit history.  Sorry I do not have better news.  Good luck with this.  One other thing I would do is to let the provider know that you intend to report this to the BBB, Consumer Affairs and the Attorney General of your state.

Expertise

I am qualified to answer questions on the following subjects: FDCPA, FCRA and HIPAA as well as medical collections, general collections and collection agency related issues. I trained these subjects at a nationwide collection agency and customer service call center and audited around 150 representatives for compliance to the laws. I have been in the Collections Industry for over 30 years. I feel that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with compassion and that is the way I trained collectors. Even though I worked for a Collection Agency, I get great satisfaction in helping those who have been mistreated or in need of help with these confusing issues.

Experience

I was the Compliance Administrator with a nationwide collection agency and customer service call center-I have trained hundreds of collectors on the above referenced topics. I have been in the medical collections industry for over twenty years and research these topics on a daily basis.
