QUESTION: Hello, Question, how long can a debt collector try to collect on a bad debt?  Is there a time frame or can they go on for years and years?
Also is it possible to ask a collections to remove the negative entry before the 7 years ? It is years here in NH.
I have 6 years on my reports , 1 more year to go , I do not get harassed at all.        I do not get phone calls or letters, so they are not trying very hard it seems?
Also can they tell I am on disability  and how much I receive?

ANSWER: Hi Jennifer.

The statute of limitations is usually 6 years.They can file a lawsuit against you and win a judgement and that will attach to any real property that you own. IF you have not been collected from by now the odds are that you won't be contacted again. After the time has passed, you will just want to dispute their claim on your credit report and odds are that it will be removed. It shouldn't be affecting your credit report right now anyways. They don't know if you are on disability or what you are receiving unless you told them that when you got your loan originally.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick reply, in NH the SOL is 3 years......6 years have passed.  Delinquent accounts stay on for 7 years, in NH , 10 for bankruptcy, my current reports show fall of date of June  2014, a little over a year from now, after they are removed, anyone checking my report would see a clean report with my good accounts, "student loan" is that correct? If the bad doesn`t automatically fall off I was informed I cam ask/demand them to be removed based on NH 7 year negative reporting.
I don`t understand your sentence  "It shouldn't be affecting your credit report right now anyways."

What I was saying is that it shouldn't be affecting your credit score. You should be able to do what you need according to your credit score. There is stuff on everyone's credit but what counts for most people is the actual score itself. Hope that helps.
