Question
My son and I purchased a vehicle through GMAC and have a loan balance of $599 that I would like to pay off and obtain the title.  My son was overseas in the Army and the car was in storage for a few months.  I retrieved the car, made all payments and kept the car insured.  GMAC will not release the title to me even if I pay the loan balance until I also pay 1,100 in miscellaneous fees that I nor my ever authorized.  Can GMAC refuse to release the title if I pay only the loan balance?

Answer
They can probably retain the title until you pay the entire amount due. The question is whether their charges are legitimate. If they can substantiate them you will probably need to pay it. They must then return the title to your son at the address they have on record or wherever your son directs them.
