Question My question concerns overdue library book fees being put on my credit report when I was under the age of 18. In 2003, when I was 15 years old, I checked out a book and misplaced it. Needless to say, I long forgot about it. I am currently 19 years old and in the United States Army, stationed in South Korea. I recently checked my credit report to find that the only negative item on my credit report was because of overdue library books. I researched it more to find my account information on the public libraries website. It showed that this debt was sent to a collection agency in 2005 just before I turned 17 years old. It also showed that I checked out three books and returned them at a time when I was in basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri for the Army. It would have been impossible for me to return them. No attempts to contact me were made by either the library or collection agency. The bad debt also did not show up on my credit until July of 2006, when the library says they turned it over to the collection agency on June of 2005. The information on my credit report shows that the collection agency only put "Key Derogatory" for the months of July and August of 2006 and the payment status is that the Credit grantor cannot locate consumer. My eighteenth birthday was 23 Aug 2006. The charge for one library book shows as $104.00 through the collection agency and the library says it as a $20.00 book. I just want to know if this can be put on my credit if I was underage.
