Question I took out a pay day loan several years -- several at once. I paid pack all but one--i thought I had paid all. Apparently, the pay day loan people were unable to ach debit my account. I have since closed this account because it was incovenient. Almost two years later after the contacted my mother, I called to find out who was contacting my mother, and it was the pay day loan people -- and I was surprised because I thought it was paid off (after this phone call I called my old bank to get transaction records). On the original phone call I requested a letter in writing before I would pay a bill - -and they were using statements like "get a piece of paper and a pencil, and write it down." The conversation was actually cordial up to that point, but that's when it went south. I explained that I didn't feel comfortable giving my account information over the phone to someone who I coudln't even spell their business name. They said they tried to contact me numerous times -- but I didn't get any calls. After explaining to me how they tried to contact me -- I remember seeing on my caller ID many 800 numbers that never left a message. And they were surprised that I wouldn't call back an 800 number when I got home from work (and I'm like who would, especially if you didn't leave a message?). Well know they are calling daily and threatening "further" action. Somehow a 300 ish debt has balooned to 758. They are saying if I don't pay within 15 days that it will only increase.
The payday loan company is actually located in Costa Rica. I wanted to contact them directly to make arrangements, but they do not have a number posted on their site.
I'm at the point where I absolutely refuse to pay the collector, they are harrasing me at work (calling my cell), my elderly mother (because that's a number they have), and they keep hanging up on me when I request something in writing.
Is there a way to get around this -- or should I bide my time until I see what their next step is? The only concern I have is that they go the bounced check route and go after me criminally.
I'm in Texas now, but this happened when I was in Oregon. Several months ago, my employer transferred me here. I am making much more money now, and can easily repay -- but I want to pay the original debtor not the people who are harrassing me.

This is a bunch of crap. The payday loan company is in Costa Rica and you are in Texas.
Tell them to go to hell and to send you verification of the debt. You want the front and back of the check.
Forget the criminal issue, it is outside of America and we do not even have coopertave agreements with Costa Rica.
Every time they call, tell them that YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO PAY SOMEONE OUTSIDE OF THE USA and tell them to call daily, but they will hear the same thing...
