Thanks Mr. Pasiola.  I've documented everything thus far, and I have every confidence that I could win a civil case regarding the invoice in question.  My concern is as to whether or not the company violated state or federal law by placing a disputed invoice with a collection agency.

I have been contacted by a collection agency over a disputed invoice from one of my (former) repair vendors.  I have clearly disputed the invoice both verbally and in writing several times.  What happened was that the repair company failed to correctly fix the problem after several tries, and we contacted another company who came in and repaired the problem AND the additional damage that was done by the original company.  I have paid the second repair company, and have provided the original repair company a copy of the detailed repair invoice.  Also, the amount billed by the original company far exceeded the agreed-upon estimate.  Yesterday I received a collection letter (form-letter) regarding the account.  As I had clearly disputed the invoice, I'm guessing I might have some recourse against the repair company other than just making the invoice go away.  Any advice is appreciated.

Commercial Firms have robotic policies, that simply move paper through a process of how to handle 0-30 day accounts to 180 day accounts.

Once an account ages, regardless of the real reason, the account is routinely turned over to an outside agency.
You need to present your data to the agency and copy the company and document everything!

Great to talk with you again.  

I do not see where there is a legal (not giving legal advice!) violation in the placement of a disputed account for collections.

I want you to send a certified letter outlining the dispute and put the agency on notice that if they report this to your credit report or the corporate reporting agencies, Experian or Dunn and Bradstreet, that you will hold them liable for damages.

One last thing.  I am involved in a full scale investigation against a company out of Illinois called International Profit Associates. They are a company that snares Small to Medium Sized Businesses to "HELP THEM OUT"
