Question
Hi,
I was told that i had an unpaid hosptial bill dated back to 1998. Over the past nine years, i had never seen any bill saying that i still owed anything to the hospital. It wasnt until i was paying off a recent  bill through the same hospital that was from this past nov. The hosptial took the money that i sent in for the recent bill(Nov)and applied it towards the 1998 bill. Were they allowed to do this? do i still have to pay the remaining balance that they are telling me that i owe them?

Answer
No they must apply the funds where you direct them to. They did this to avoid the statute of limitations I am sure. You may demand the funds be reapplied to the correct account. If they do not, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission or State Attorney General. I will need more information to tell whether there is a statute of limitations for the debt. What state are you in? IF you need help negotiating a resolution go to www.financialemergency.com and send me more information or call my office 877 270 8204.
