Collections Law - judgement against me

Expert: Kathleen Eads - 4/12/2006

Question
Hi,

I was a co defendant in a suit...the defendant was not present at the trial due to imprisonment so I was talked into accepting a judgement against me.  My attorney is no longer practicing so how can I get information about my judgement?  I have no intention on paying it and the plantiff knows that.  I understand that the defendant must pay restitution for other federal charges which include this plantif, how do I find out about that?  My attorney told me as she paid it would be credit for me.  Is that correct? Her federal charges were for credit card fraud.  In my case  she purchased airline tickets from me (travel agent) her check was bad so I cancelled the reservations and the travelers sued her and me.  I still think I was wrongfully sued.  Can I reverse the judgement?

Thanks, LIsa.

Answer
I am extremely confused.  The defendant is in prison on fraud charges, wrote you a bad check, and must pay resitution....how on earth did that result in a judgment against you?

I would contact the courts for answers to your question, as they are more legal in subject versus credit/collection questions.  You may even want to consider consulting & hiring an attorney to get this fixed, if you feel you were wrongfully sued.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Kathleen Crabtree
