I had an account with Sears and my last payment was July 9 1999. I believe it was turned into collections in Sept of 1999. I was curious with the whole 180 day rule how long can this appear on my credit report. They have threatened me and told me that they will base it off when the purchased it in 2001. If I write to the Fair Trade Commission would that help stop them.

First of all, SEARS is one of the worst credit providers when it comes to reporting correct credit data to the bureaus.
I have gone against them many times, and we have had to go to great lengths to fix THEIR MISTAKES!
So, your account was last paid (THE DATE OF LAST ACTIVITY) IN 1999. That is about 7 years since the account was delinquent.
That means that this account should be falling off of your credit report very soon.
Here is the deal. DO NOT PAY ON THIS ACCOUNT OR IT WILL RESET THE DATE OF LAST ACTIVITY!
If you want immediate results, we can both call the collection agency and I am almost certain that this can go away quickly. All that you would have to do is join the VIP PROGRAM on my website www.mycollector.com and I will call them with you.
It is a good Idea to also file with the FTC, and also YOUR STATE Attorney Generals Office of Consumer Protection.
