Shane's mom passed away this week. She had been ill for quite some time. Not sure if that was the reason for his absence.

btw -- ross ended up married to ed's wife after the dust settles - so looks like the soap opera version wins.  no other insights on shane.  too bad -- the band isn't the same without these two

I use to work with Shane Evans mother at a hospital in Georgia I also went to high school with Shane. I came across this obituary today and apparently Shane's mom passed away from cancer. Real sorry to hear that. But this might explain his absence as I know he was very close to her.

Shane quit the band because Ed was screwing him out of a lot of money owed to the band as a whole. He did do a movie but the reason he left was because Ed is a control freak and won't share any of the publishing with any of the band members.

Ross left the band because he was caught doing Ed's wife. That is why they got a divorce and Ross is married to her now.

Those are the facts.

I've heard from a sort-of reliable source about Ross a couple years ago.  I was living in Atlanta, had a friend who had a friend (I know sounds sketchy) and this friend was doing time at a studio that Collective Soul minus Ross were at, presumably before their last album.  He overheard and passed along that yeah Ross and Ed's wife had an affair and Ross left/was kicked out.

I'm spoke with Pierre Roberre of Philadelphia 93.3 WMMR fame a couple of years ago at the gym we share.  He told me that the affair issue was not a rumor and that it indeed was the reason for Ross departing.  His affair with Ed's wife is actuality.

When Ross was let go of the band, there was a comment on the official Collective Soul website that said something like "his actions threatened the future of the band so he was let go.  It was my personal speculation that it had something to do with them launching their own record label.  Unfortunately, that information doesn't help the mystery as all 3 speculations could just as well fit with the comment on the website.  Maybe he was doing all 3.  Doing drugs while doing Ed's wife, and signing with someone else.  Haha.

Anyway, the theory about him sleeping with Ed's wife does not make sense at all.  If you got to see Ross in the DVD Music in High Places, Live in Morocco, you'll see that he has a very introverted personality.  While Ed is more of the A-type.  I can't imagine Ross stealing away Ed's woman, or any woman for that matter.  It just does not happen in the animal kingdom, no matter how good of a guitar player he is.

Some good words about Ross,

The drugs or alcohol theory sounds plausible, but it pure speculation, and as fans, we shouldn't expect the worst from them.  It was a sad day when I found out that Ross was gone from the band.  From the moment a collective soul song began, the solo was  what I looked forward to the most.  The solo was the vehicle to bring the song to a climax.  I've seen Ed Rolland perform the song "Shine" where he just left out the solo, and as much as I love collective soul, that performance was undoubtably very soul-less.

I am still waiting for the announcement that Ross has come back to Collective soul.

As for Shane, he was a very good percussionist, and definitely had the most interesting personality of the group.  But it sounds like he has been adequately replaced.  Unlike Ross, who is irreplaceable.

well, shane is my cousin (if you belive me or not) and i herd that he left the band cause the lead singer was getting all the money to himself. so my dad said. but in truth, i dont really know. i'll ask him some time later.

Well first let me say that Collective soul is the most "under- rated band in America. It is amazing to me how they have held together considering the "turmoil", however, if you understand "faith", it isnt surprising at all.

Regardless of why Ross Childress left, Ed Roland is the "heart and soul" of this band, and that should be respected above everything.

I admire him more than any Rock artist of his stature of my generation. Humble, deep, faith driven, giving, and about the music..not the money.  I put him in a select group of artists.

Shane Evans was involved in an altercation with Rome, Ga police and was incarcerated in the Floyd County Jail on April 20th.  He was driving his girlfriends vehicle in this county. Five minutes after he was taken to jail, his girlfriend Delight Corina was killed in a head on collision.  Read about it in the Rome Tribune, April 21st.

Go to IMDB; Shane is listed as Shane Evans (III). His credit is Collective Soul and he was cast as "Shane" in the 2007 TV movie "Mad Bad". If you click on 'more' next to his stats you will see his trademark listing sunglasses and knit cap. It must be accurate. Hope it helps.

I totally agree with Lucidmike78 Ross Is irreplaceable, but I doubt he will return to Collective Soul....such a shame!

I would just like you all to know, the cause of " Ed and Stephanie's " divorce WAS NOT because of an affair between "Stephanie and Ross". Did "Stephanie and Ross" end up together? Yes,but not anymore.

Unfortunately we can all but confirm the reason for the departure of Ross. It's really really sad given the deep meaning of songs like "Tremble for My Beloved". The truth is Collective Soul has never been the same since. Collective Soul used to have so many layers to each and every song, and after Blender those layers haven't been there. I still love their newer stuff, but there's an absence of what made Collective Soul unique and truly great.

He was having an affair with ed's wife. I have a friend who is a good friend of Ed's and this is what he told me ed had mentioned. Don't know the full story about Shane though. Hope that helps

kay wrote at 2011-05-20 23:24:34
If you look on Ancestry.com you can see that Ross and Ed's ex, Stepahie Boley married. So looks like that rumor is true.

True: Ross was having an affair with Ed's wife and was asked to leave the band.

True: Shane was asked to leave the band because of his drug problems.

intheknow wrote at 2012-12-01 07:38:20
Shane left the band due to drug issues which he has since conquered. 3 yrs clean and sober. He addressed a group of high school students today about the dangers of drugs and bad life choices, and takes full responsibility for being asked to leave the band, harbors no ill will.. its all here and there will be more candid interviews coming soon.
