Question
I am working only nine hours a week now compared to working forty hours a week last month. I do go to college part-time but wish to go full-time so I can finish school alot sooner. My question is that I have alot of bills to pay and was wandering if there would be any kind of help for me in getting my bills payed as I am thinking of going to school full-time. I am single and rely on nobody to help me along. I would appreciate any suggestions you could give me.

Answer
Hi Rhonda,

First off, financial aid is based on the prior year's income.  You can make a case for a sudden drop in income but it is up to the school's discretion.  The bigger question is how to get money for living expenses.  Aid will cover (if you qualify) tuition, books, and possibly room and board of you are living in a dorm.  You will have to apply to a 4-year school and fill out the FASFA form to find out what you qualify for.  Community Colleges normally offer very little aid.  Unfortunately this whole process is complicated and time consuming.  I don't see you being able to work part time and go to school without going into debt.  Sorry for the bad news.  Apply anyway and see what you can get.  If you need help, all schools have the forms and someone to help you.

I can answer questions about the financial aid process and the formulas used by the Department of Education in determining who qualifies for funding. I can also help people qualify for more funding by making strategic decisions to avoid being penalized for having "countable" assets. I cannot answer questions about scholarships.
