Question
My son graduated college May 09 with a bachelor's degree.  he is now entering a police academy through our local community college and will earn college credits as well. the program is 2 semesters.  He just found out that he is not eligible for any kind of financial aid.  As a NYS resident, are there programs available to assist him in paying the $6000 cost, especially if it qualifies as a retraining program or do to the fact that his current employment is seasonal and will end soon?  His college degree is a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management.

Answer
Financial aid is normally only available for undergrad.  Wish I had better news.  As for what the state or someprovate agency might offer I could not answer.  It pays to search around but is outside my experience and sounds unlikely.  My advice is to get a job now that he has a degree and save some money, perhaps think about it some more.

I can answer questions about the financial aid process and the formulas used by the Department of Education in determining who qualifies for funding. I can also help people qualify for more funding by making strategic decisions to avoid being penalized for having "countable" assets. I cannot answer questions about scholarships.
