Question
Good evening, first and foremost I'd like to thank you for your time and patience in answering this question. Anyways, I am a 24 years old and I am in my second year of community college in Miami, FL. I have a keen interest in playing college football. I did not play high school football by choice, but I played pop warner for years. My question is would it be a wiser decision to try out for a smaller program prior to attempting a school like The U? Also is weight lifting important? I prefer calisthenics. I am 6'2, 180 lbs and have a medium frame. I would consider myself to be pretty strong. I am quick and agile,. I have no ran a forty in years, but I still participate in tournament like Let it Fly and still show alot of speed and movement. I have a good head on my shoulder and I have a vast knowledge of the game. I coached a recreation team in the PAL Miami for 6 years, as well as followed and played football since the age of 3. Once again, thank you for your advice.

George, Happy New Year !

You need to contact the Athletic Department to get an interview with a Coach or Scout.  They will tell you when any tryout dates are scheduled.  You're going to be on the bottom of the food chain by not having high school experience but the fact that you've played and coached a Rec. team is a plus.  Your age is either a positive or negative.  If your speed is slower than the young stud's 40 time, then you will be defeated.  However, if you can compete AND use your older age has a Leadership example, then you have a chance to make the squad.

Miami's program is at a low right now but can build it back in a hurry.  South Florida, and FIU are cutting into the next that FSU, Miami and the Gators have been drawing from the Florida crowd.  With that being said, you may get an opportunity, providing you can show them you have promise.

Yes, weightlifting is important but more so for some positions.  Your size indicates you'd be suited for WR, corneerback or special teams.  But, what about your durability?  When you see the blue chips flying through the air, will you be able to take that kind of hit?

Coach Richt saw Moreno, the freshman running back, at a tryout.  He saw the passion of Moreno and knew he was a star.  He just helped Georgia win a bowl game this week, so who knows.  If you have the desire and if your body will stand the intense training, yes you can make the team.  It's a dream that few men can accomplish, so you need to shoot for it, regardless how it ends.  You will always regret not having tried.  The beauty is that you have NOT waited too long.  Do it today!

Listen to my youngest son's music.  I'm a shamelss promoter and we think he's going to be famous soon.
