College Football/Transfer from D3 to D1 or D1AA

Question
Dear Thom, I was wondering what my chances are to transfer from a good D3
program to D1 or D1AA program? I was 1st team all league linebacker in high
school with 101 solo tackles 1 sack 1 int for a touchdown (40) yards, but my
coaches were not good at all about getting their players out. I played in a
pretty good division playing some of the top southern california football
teams. Now at my first year in college i started at the nickel linebacker
position but do not have a sufficient amount of tape to send to schools if i
wanted to transfer, what should i do in this regard ? Also what would my
chances be at playing at a D1 D1AA school? I would be happy to just work
hard and be on special teams but my ultimate goal would to be starting by
senior year?  I am 6"0 205lbs and probably run around a 4.8-4.9 but my
shuttle time is better around a 4.1-4.2. I would just like to know how i could
start this process of talking with other coaches and what my chances are of
seeing any potential interest. Thank you

Answer
Erick, hello!

Wow!  Your stats sound like you're ready for most schools.  You need to send the above information to any of the colleges you have an interest in.  I do not know what state and schools you prefer, but you should have a good bit of interest from most of them.

Contact the Athletic departments.  They will tell you the NCAA rules as to dates, schedules and allowable interviews.  If you do not have a lot stats, see if you can get some game film or newspaper clippings.  Do you have any YouTube shots?  Get your current coach to discuss a move with you.  They may be willing to help you move up a division or two.  I tell players to contact their local high school and college football officials association.  A lot of the officials have college experience and contacts with people, maybe in the college of your choice.  Talk to your local Congressman or Congresswoman to seek their help.
