College Football/UGA Football Walk-On

Question
Mr. Brooks,
I have been a fan of Georgia Football (the only true football) since I was born,
and have loved football all of my life as well. I would have given my arm and
leg for my high school to have a football team, but we are only a small,
private Christian school. Anyway, I'm a senior and my brothers have been
joking with me about the idea of me trying out for the UGA football team next
year. I have already been accepted as a student on the Early Action plan. I
would just like to know how often they take walk-ons (especially ones that
haven't played football in high school.) I'm 6'5", 235 lb. and am willing to
work as hard as I need to to accomplish my goals. I've played basketball and
tennis throughout high school, and have been considered a leader on every
team I've ever been on. I understand that I'd be like, 5th string, and I might
not even see any playing time, but that isn't what is important to me. I would
just love to be caught up in such an amazing atmosphere and enjoy all of the
experiences that would come with it. I'm open to any and every position that
they might want to put me at, and I'd work hard at wherever they place me.
Anyway, I was just wondering whether I should actually consider trying out or
not, because I realize that this would be something that I would have to jump
on right now if I was to try it. Thanks a bunch!

Answer
Jeff, How 'bout dem Dawgs?  I knew we'd send those Pineapple heads back to Hawai'i with the Bulldogs nipping at the wings on their plane!

After tonight's victory, you may have to get in a line of 2,000 that want to be on that Roster!  UGA has a chance to be rated in the top 2 this year and will likely start the season in the Top 3.  So, getting a position on the team will be daunting.

You need to contact the Athletic Department immediately.  They will tell you when the Tryout dates are scheduled.  They are scouting and recruiting this month, so do not delay.  Your size would fit for the team, but you have to show great skills or you will not make it. You need to get with some players/coaches/YMCA/county recreation Department/ that can get you screened for your best positions and pros and cons.

Even if the 2008 team didn't have Championship possibilities, it would be difficult to make that squad, but your Leadership could make the difference.

You have to pursue your dream.  Do not give up easily.  Get with some of the current players.  If they like you, and if they think you have possibilities, they will get you an audition for the team!!

Have a great year!!
