College Football/Walk-on
Expert: Thom Brooks - 1/14/2008
QuestionHi- I am a college junior academically but sophomore as far as athletic eligibility goes. I played a year of college soccer at a Georgia college and recently transferred back home. I have always had a passion for football but because of high school politics, never had an opportunity to play. I have to formal experience whatsoever, but have grown up playing the game pick-up style. Recently, I played flag football and had the time of my life. My team won the championship and many people asked me if I had any colleges looking at me in high school. When I told them I never played before, they were shocked. I am a natural athlete and played every high school sport offered (except football). I watch football religiously but no nothing about specific play calls or formations. I am 6'0 190 with great hands and a sturdy frame. As for speed goes, my 40 is nothing compared to these high school track stars. It is probably high 4's. My passion, desire, work ethic and pure love of the game, I belive, is unmatchable. I see myself a lot like Rudy, just with athleticism. I've been accepted at UF, one of the best football powers. Is there any chance at a walk on position?
AnswerGreg, hello and Happy New Year! Go Gators!
I'm a Bulldog and Seminole fan but love those Gators, too.
At one of the nation's top football programs, your chances to make that team would be much different than if you were trying to play at a lesser school.
Being a soccer player and an athlete, maybe you would consider trying out as a kicker or on Special Teams until you can show the Coaching staff if you have the "Rudy" in you!
Your size is good and your speed sounds acceptable, but would compete with the Lightning bolts that run up and down the Swamp, so you have to be good, fast and smart.
Give it your best shot and walk on! The Bulldogs discovered Moreno as a walk-on. He had an incredible Freshmen year. You may be that special star that catches their eye!
You're outstanding for pursuing your education.
If you decide not to play football, How about considering being a high school football official, or get accredited to be an assistant coach for the local high schools? You could learn in a hurry. The YMCA and recreational departments are always looking for quality people to help the young kids learn the game. If you make the Gator's team, you may not have time to do these things until later.
Keep me posted and have an incredible year!

Please listen to my youngest son's band. They're going to be famous someday. Maybe they'll get to Gainesville soon.
