College Football/3 second rule

Question
During the BSU victory over USU on 11/08/08, a referee announced that there were more than twelve men in the huddle for more than three seconds against BSU.  Is there such a thing?  This is the first time I have ever heard of that rule.

Answer
Todd, Hello!

I am not familiar with a 3 second rule.  He may have used that time as a guide.  If 12 men are on the field and if the Ready for Play signal has been sounded, maybe the clock was within seconds of expiring and he knew the player would not be able to get to the sidelines within 3 seconds before the snap.  If you find the explanation, please let me know!

Take care,

Thom Brooks
