Question
I am a true fan of football and do understand this game more that than most but i still don't understand how officials call "holding".Does it have to be obvious? does the player being held must be in position to make a play? is arm barring a player considered holding? thanks for your insight

I'd like to follow up with a reply tomorrow to give you a very detailed reply. But to simple answer your questions Holding is the restricting (through grabbing, grasping, controlling) of an opponent with hands or arms. To be called it needs to be observed by the official. We have a philosophy that we holding foul must be "Big" not ticky tack, they must create an advantage and must be at thepoint of attack. Holding certain playerswill result in different penalties (i.e. holding a receiver). Arm barring is a restriction of a player, his refers to an action usually associated with Pass interference.
