Question
In a recent local high school football game, during a run play, a call was made on the defense. The referee called an "illegal defensive block" and assessed a 15yd penalty. I have never heard of this rule. Is there such a rule?

Answer
Richard, hello!

Some of the 15 yard penalties that could have been assessed were:

Illegal block after valid or invalid fair catch signal.

Illegal block below waist or on free kicker or holder.

Chop Block.

Tripping.

Illegal Personal contact.

Charging into an opponent obviously out of the play.

Butt Block.

Unfair Acts.

The official misspoke but likely was referencing one of the above penalties.

Take care!
