College Football/1-AA walk on chances?
Expert: Thom Brooks - 12/9/2008
QuestionHi. Football is a big part of my life and has been for a long time. In my junior season I played for a state semi final team and saw substantial playing time although I did not start. I actually was second string for every position on the O and D lines and played a quarter or more each game. By the way, we had two D1 prospects on the line and we were ranked 3rd in the state, so I was playing among some great talent. My senior year I was an all-district selection and I knew I wanted to keep playing. I went to a small D3 school where I played football- only seeing JV time my first year. I loved football still but I wanted to go to a more academic school. I ended up at a great school but they dont have a football team. Now, Im trying to transfer to a great academic school where I can still play football. Davidson and Georgetown are great options but Id love to go somewhere where football is a bigger deal. Could I play at Furman, William and Mary, or the University of Richmond? Im 6 foot 1. I weight 265. I bench 300, squat 390, and clean 290. I have a lot of work to do and I understand that. I will be taking the next year off from school (some family issues) but I will be working very hard toward the dream of playing big time ball. Do you think I could do it? What schools would you reccommend? Thanks SOO much!
AnswerThomas, hello!
If you have the courage to try out for the tema, you will get a chance to earn a spot. Being able to play many positions will give you an advantage. Coaches love to hear that you are able to be effective at more than one position on those lines. Playing for a championship caliber team like Richmond will be more difficult than other teams, but all things are possible.
Taking a year off will set you behind those that have continued experience but if you continue to work out, stay on a healthy diet, and get with that college of choice, their coaches will get you prepared.
Merry Christmas!
