Question
Hi Thom.  I have a question concerning my chances to play football in college (preferably Auburn).  To be honest, I never played football in high school and I am out of shape.  I am around 5'11"-6'0" and weigh about 235lbs.  Recently I have straightened my life out and have decided that something I want to do more than anything is play football.  I have began a rigorous work-out routine that consists of daily strength training (free weights), aerobics (suicide sprints, various lineman drills learned from other players and from instructional videos via youtube), and am on a strict high protein, low-fat diet.  Doing this, though, I'm sure my weight will change.  I know that my chances are slim to none but I do want to get the opinion of someone with your experience.  I would like to play a position on the defensive line, mainly focusing on nose guard.  I am, however, open to suggestions on position for someone of my stature.  I am fast for my size and have decent ball handling skills, both of which I am training on improving.  What do you think that I can do to improve my chances of walking onto the team.  This is something I am willing to go to extreme lengths and work day and night for.  I plan on transferring to Auburn in the Spring 2010 semester so I will have an entire year to work.  Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.  Best wishes, Devon.

Answer
Devon, hello!

Your chances are not favorable to walk on to the caliber of Auburn, without experience.  The War Eagles, Plainsmen and Tigers (they use all three names!), have Blue Chip player lined up so you would have to be truly outstanding to pass them by.  If you have the skill, the Auburn staff will give you a chance.  The men you're competing against have 4 years experience, so it's going to be tough.

With that said, I have attached the rules and other sites for you to explore.  You have a better chance of making a lesser division school but your studies should take precedence.

Get busy and let me know which team you make!

Happy New Year!
