College Football/Field goal net

Question
Why is there a field goal net?

Answer
Darrell, hello!

The net saves the football when they're kicked into the stands.  They would lose 10-15 balls per game and they are expensive, not to mention there is a possibility that the team and / or stadium could be held legally liable if a fan was hurt by the ball.
