Question
Thom, I am enlisted in the Navy and I will be almost 24 when I get out. However Im still in phenomenal shape. I love working out and I also love football. I've never played organized football, I played soccer and some baseball in middle and high school. Im looking to go to ODU and I know this year they are having open tryouts. I am looking to tryout in a few years I will be about 23. Do you think its possible to make a team without having played before? I dont have great hands but Im about 6'1 and 215 and I can add more muscle. I was thinking of going for linebacker or safety. What should I do?

Answer
Luke, hello!

Stay in shape and you can get your chance.  Your age may be a detriment especially since you do not have game experience.  However, your age may give ODU the Leadership they will need.  I cannot advise your best position.  If you're an athlete the scouts and coaches will recognize your ability and fit your skill where you can help the team.  ODU is in the building mode so they will consider you if you have promise.  Contact them immediately.  Contact the players.  You would not be on their radar screen since you're not close to helping them..........

Thanks for every single day you wear an American Uniform.  You already are on the best team in the world. Anything less is just not civilized.
