College Football/walk on

Question
I've never had the opportunity to play football but always wanted to play. I
played rugby briefly in high school and did wrestling. I never thought I was
good enough or in good enough shape to play, but have found a new out
look and am working out and working hard everyday to get in the best shape
I can. I'm currently attending a 2 year community college, and as far as I know
will be eligible for four years of sports at a NCAA school. I will be 19 when I
transfer so I dont think age is much of a factor.
The school I want to attend is a division 1 school... Will a college coach
even give me a chance? I have no real experience playing football, but feel
that I could offer a program alot. I am a very hard worker, I don't think I
would ever give up (on a play or on a game even if trailing 31 to nothing). I
feel that I have a wealth of knowledge of the game, and even might already
have some useful knowledge from wrestling (like using hands when blocking
or engaging a blocker).  I am a very competitive person, and I am a team
player and not the least bit selfish.

Should I try to contact coaches at the school right away or in the next year as
it gets closer to the time I might transfer? I am not afraid of a hard road or a
tough journey, but would appreciate any advise you have.

FYI: I am 6'2" 215 lbs and my favorite football player is Kevin Faulk

There are many coaches who will give you a chance.  If you have talent and can be an asset to the team you are what a coach wants.  You played rugby so you have some skills and you wrestled so you have quickness.  Uses these as selling points.  Can you kick?  Punt, drop kick, etc.?

Contact the football office right away and talk to them.  If you get brushed off, continue to follow up with the coach in writing or ask to set up a 5 minute meeting with him.  Let him know you will be a transfer student and let him know when you will be enrolling.  Ask him what he would like you to do in the mean time, i.e. types of work out, etc.

Between now and then make sure you hit the weight room and get yourself on a strength program and make sure you are conditioning and running.  If you can work on your skills before enrolling you will have just that much better of a chance.
Best of luck
